Barren Box Storage and Wetland

Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) is the caretaker of Barren Box Storage and Wetland, an 'icon' project in the MIA, which has the interim aim to "create an ecologically alive and diverse wetland that also respects, preserves and enhances the cultural significance of the area."

Following intensive planning and construction the project moves into the next Phase: Wetland Rehabilitation and Management Planning. To provide scientific, cultural and heritage and community input a Steering and Technical Committee has been established. To support the rehabilitation planning process these committees will consider:

• the vision, goals and objectives for the wetland,
• issues, challenges and opportunities,
• research and development
• and timelines and actions.

Community Involvement

MI realise the future health of the environment relies on involvement of the community in environmental projects. To assist the rehabilitation process we need to express what it is we want to achieve at the wetland. The community will be asked to participate in wetland rehabilitation discussions in the future.

Murrumbidgee Irrigation will continue its commitment to this valuable storage and environmental asset to ensure its usefulness and natural beauty are enjoyed by future generations.
