MIA ENVIROWISE What is it?

The goal of MIA EnviroWise is to maintain and enhance the sustainability and profitability of agriculture in the MIA and Districts.

MIA EnviroWise contributes to the sustainability of farming, rural industries and associated communities and supports the protection and enhancement of natural resources. The program identifies outcomes over a 30 year period.

It is a joint venture between government and our community in response to environmental problems and opportunities in the MIA and surrounding districts. The program was initiated in 1989 by the MIA community as a result of widespread flooding and resulted in the development of a land and management plan, with a final plan put to government in 1998. Benefits of the plan for the MIA environment and communities were recognised by both State and Federal Governments, with funding made available for the next phase of development. In 2001, the original land and water management plan was renamed MIA EnviroWise to signify the move into implementation of the program, now in its fifth year.

Key objectives are:
> to maintain or increase irrigated agriculture productivity
> to reduce seepage to the groundwater system
> to keep drainage water quality within agreed standards
> to reduce surface drainage volumes to acceptable levels
> to protect our natural resources
> to minimise or prevent downstream effects
