Murrumbidgee Irrigation

24 June 2002

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has been an irrigator owned company for three years. The adjustment from a Government Department to a private enterprise have been significant for both shareholders and staff.

Geoff Hipkins, Chief Executive of Murrumbidgee Irrigation firmly believes that to be successful more individual and organisational growth is necessary. "We need to change the way we do things." said Mr Hipkins. "the Company belongs to the farmers and we are working for them to bring growth and prosperity to the agribusiness of the region."

"Likewise, farmers need to see us as part of their team." continued Geoff, "We want to know about inefficiencies in our system, if farmers know about a problem - let us know about it - we have offices in Leeton and Griffith, and our field operators are out every day. And, if you don't get satisfaction from my staff - let me know about that!"

"I mean it, we are a Service Company and our shareholders are our valued customers."

Geoff has been with Murrumbidgee Irrigation since January taking over from Cedric Hoare who retired in November 2001. Geoff has a background in natural resource management from a variety of industries. "in every organisation or industry, people are the key. Staff need to be motivated to try new things and new ways of doing old things. With a motivated staff quality customer service is guaranteed." said Geoff.

"For example, water availability during the peak summer months this year was a major challenge due to restrictions on summer croppers. We initiated an Advance Access Scheme that allowed customers to supplement their share of peak season flows and finish their crops.

The initiative worked because we were able to create a mutually beneficial sharing scheme. This is the benefit that can be expected when all parties work together.

One of the internal initiatives we've implemented is a self managing team known as Elvis. The name is a bit of fun, but I'm quite serious about the intent for the team." said Geoff., "it provides a forum for people on the ground to come up with ideas and programs that will move the Company forward. Of course we have our formal channels for organisational development which is driven by the implementation of our Strategic Plan, but this provides a less formal arena where anyone can promote an idea to the group."

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has a mission "To provide excellent, cost effective irrigation services and meet the highest possible standards of care". There isn't one single person anywhere capable of doing that job on their own. It's about everyone of us working together to achieve the best possible result. My team - my staff - are committed to that mission. With continued support and input from our shareholders the future is a profitable, sustainable irrigation industry."
