Water Temporary Transfer Rules Released

14 July 2003

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has released its temporary transfer rules for the new irrigation season.

"The outlook continues to be very difficult for this extreme water shortage year, said Geoff Hipkins, Chief Executive of Murrumbidgee Irrigation. Since the deferral of the new Water Management Act arrangements it has been important for the Company to assist irrigators understand the water transfer rules for the current season.

The allocations were recently announced by DIPNR and reflect the negotiations undertaken with valley representatives.

Under the valley arrangements, 'high security allocation transfers close on 1 August similar to last year, said Mr Hipkins.

"Our priority is to continue to help irrigators through the new season". We recognise that allocations are different this year, and some users will need help. Horticultural growers with high security allocation will be able to access up to 95% allocation this year for use on farm."

We will also be endeavouring to find water for any horticultural grower who needs more than 95% or is irrigating horticulture with general security allocation and considers that they will not have enough water for on farm needs this year.

"We are currently negotiating for water from the Snowy Hydro scheme, as we did last year. When more information is available, irrigators will be informed. Those who elect to take up extra water will be obligated to pay the costs.

Mr Hipkins reminded irrigators that the Company has no extra water and overuse of allocation this year is not permitted.

All shareholders and other interest parties should note that the new rules are available at Company offices at Griffith and Leeton and at water brokers and agents.

"I urge all irrigators concerned about their water requirements to contact our staff as soon as possible to discuss their water provisions" said Mr Hipkins.
