March Water Supplies
27 February 2003
While recent rains have slowed demand on irrigation supplies there is still a need to be careful with river management to ensure the limited water remaining in the dams is not unnecessarily wasted. Murrumbidgee Irrigation is now gearing up to manage the coming summer crop finishes and pasture watering for stock demands during March and April.
In response to today's announcement of possible restrictions by DLWC, Geoff Hipkins, Chief Executive of Murrumbidgee Irrigation said, "there will be limits to the water available, and while these will be based on State Water river sharing principles, we are confident we can meet all reasonable demands for water through March and into April."
In an effort to increase the effectiveness of water management, Mr Hipkins added that early ordering is critical to make sure users are not disappointed.
"As the drought continues, we ask irrigators to order 4 to 7 days in advance to help with planning channel flows and dam releases. Those who order early will get priority if short term restrictions are experienced."
"Murrumbidgee Irrigation is committed to working with our shareholders. During times of restrictions in water supply, it is important that all sectors of the community work together to support each other," concluded Mr Hipkins.
