Water Supplies Shortage

31 March 2003

Continuing dry and hot weather has maintained pressure on irrigation water availability causing further limits to be placed on river diversions. The remaining water in the Dams needs to be protected to ensure essential supplies into the future.

In response to the latest water restrictions, the Company is introducing tighter water-sharing arrangements to ensure the available water is shared fairly. As a consequence a number of irrigators may have flows limited and deliveries may be rostered.

Following Friday's announcement of restrictions by DLWC, Geoff Hipkins, Chief Executive of Murrumbidgee Irrigation said, "the limits and management regime in place aim to provide equitable sharing for all irrigators, many of whom have limited allocations remaining. Where possible we will aim for flow rates that optimise irrigation effectiveness on farm."

"We ask that all irrigators forecast water orders 7 days in advance and place reasonable orders as limited water is available. It is important that we work together to support each other during this difficult period," concluded Mr Hipkins.

Irrigators are encouraged to keep in close contact with their Channel Attendant or Planner.
