OPENING DOORS FOR LOCAL YOUTH

28 January 2004

DOORS is an exciting new social program offering financial support to local youth as they strive to reach their personal potential in educational, vocational, social and cultural endeavours.

Southern Riverina Youth Support Services (SRYSS) and Murrumbidgee Irrigation are proud to introduce DOORS to the communities of the MIA.

“DOORS is about local people working together to support local people”, said Geoff Hipkins Chief Executive of Murrumbidgee Irrigation. “Youth are the future of our rural communities, and this is another way we can ensure the continuing strength and sustainability of our region.”

During 2003 DOORS provided financial support for six young people in the area.

Deb Longhurst, Executive Director of SRYSS described DOORS “as a program designed to provide financial assistance to young people who do not have the resources they need to achieve their goals. There are a lot of young people in this area who could benefit from assistance to maintain education, cultural and social pursuits and fully achieve their potential. DOORS is about providing that assistance and helping young people to be their best.”

Applications for the DOORS program close on 27 February 2004. Forms and information packs are available from Murrumbidgee Irrigation offices in Leeton and Griffith.

“Application forms need to be completed collaboratively with the young people involved and a referring agency. Anyone requiring assistance with the application form should contact me at SRYSS,” said Ms Longhurst.

“DOORS provides a fantastic opportunity for young people, and Murrumbidgee Irrigation is proud to be a part of the program. I know the people we helped during 2003 were very grateful for our assistance and we hope to support many more in the coming years,” concluded Mr Hipkins.
