BARREN BOX GIVEN GREEN LIGHT

Craig Knowles, Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources has approved the development project at Barren Box Swamp.

“This will mark the beginning of a new era in water management for the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area,” said Dick Thompson, Chairman of Murrumbidgee Irrigation. “The $30 million infrastructure investment is a win for all parties.

I believe this project will clearly demonstrate that investment in water savings has significant advantages over purchasing water. By creating savings we can deliver water to the environment without reducing water available to irrigators and improve the environment at the point the savings were made – Barren Box. These multiple outcomes would not be possible if the water were simply purchased.”

The development will see Barren Box Swamp split into three cells. The Wah Wah main canal will be widened and an additional en-route storage facility developed. The project is expected to generate an average of 20,000ML in water savings each year, improve the quality and reliability of water for downstream users and return water to the environment.

“Murrumbidgee Irrigation will commence works as soon as the 28 day cooling-off period expires,” continued Mr Thompson. “The works will involve a number of local contractors and some industry specialists. With all going according to plan we expect to be fully operational by late 2007.

Detailed investigations of the wetland component will commence shortly after the on-site works begin. Extensive consultation and engagement of all stakeholders will take place throughout the investigation process.

The Barren Box project is an example of irrigation and natural resource management working together for mutual benefit.

I would like to thank Minister Knowles for his support and understanding during the planning stages of this project. The positive outcomes will be enjoyed by all those with an interest in water,” concluded Mr Thompson.
