INCIDENT NEAR MAIN CANAL

There has been a possible water contamination incident adjacent to the Main Canal. Some evidence of a chemical residue has been found on a nearby bank.

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has notified the Police, the EPA and the Griffith City Council and an investigation is currently underway.

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has shut down the Main Canal and advised Griffith City Council not to draw water until test results confirm there has been no contamination.

Residents downstream of Walla Avenue are advised to ensure they do not inadvertently use or come in contact with water from the Main Canal until further notice.

“We have moved quickly to understand the nature and extent of the incident,” said Matt Linnegar, Corporate Affairs Manager, Murrumbidgee Irrigation. “At the moment we are doing everything we can to mitigate any potential impact on the community. We will advise all interested parties of the outcomes of our investigation as soon as possible.”
