NO RISK TO WATER QUALITY FOLLOWING YESTERDAY'S INCIDENT NEAR MAIN CANAL

Murrumbidgee Irrigation are pleased to announce that there has been no risk to water quality following yesterday’s incident near the main canal.

Investigations revealed that the suspected contamination was the result of the Rural Fire Brigade refilling their trucks after conducting routine drills.

The Main Canal has been reopened and all affected parties notified.

“We are relieved that there was no risk to the public or any of our customers accessing water from the Canal,” said Matt Linnegar, Corporate Affairs Manager, Murrumbidgee Irrigation. “I would like to congratulate our staff as well as the EPA and Griffith City Council for acting quickly to mitigate any damage to the public.

On a positive note this has served as a reminder of the importance of the water supply system to our livelihood and that any incidents must be reported.

It was unfortunate that yesterday’s incident could have been avoided had we been advised the drill was taking place, however, we have a good relationship with the local fire services and other groups who access the channels as part of their community service role and remain confident the incident will not be repeated.

I was very pleased with our response to the incident and that our contingency plan is effective,” concluded Mr Linnegar.
