WHITTON PUBLIC SCHOOL GOES GREEN WITH HELP FROM MIA ENVIROWISE
Murrumbidgee Irrigation's MIA EnviroWise program actively
supports local community groups and schools in projects that relate to
the MIA EnviroWise principles of enhancing and protecting our natural
resources. Discretionary funding grants of up to $2000 are available for
approved projects.
As part of this initiative, Whitton Public School students, teachers and
parents have constructed a purpose built greenhouse to raise germinated
local native seeds to be used in plantings around the school and district.
In line with the school's environmental policy, students will be involved
in learning how to identify and collect seed, germination techniques,
seedling growth requirements and hands-on planting techniques.
Planting areas have been identified around the school and wetland within
the Whitton Common, concentrating in particular on local tree and shrub
species essential for re-establishing a mid storey layer to attract woodland
birds. The project aims to develop students' knowledge of their environment
by involving them in all the processes from collecting and identifying
the seed through to planting the seedling.
