8 May 2008 MI LAUNCHES BIODIVERSITY STEWARDSHIP SCHEME Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) is proud to announce the launch of their biodiversity stewardship program, MIA EnviroWise BioTender. "This is an exciting project, a first for the MIA, and aims to encourage landholders and groups to protect and enhance biodiversity by providing annual stewardship payments for the maintenance and enhancement of remnant native vegetation" announced Rob Kelly, MI's Environment Manager. It is expected that a minimum of 1000 ha will be conserved in the first round of the tender. "Managing Biodiversity over the long term acknowledges that it plays a critical role in providing a healthy landscape for productive farming systems now and in the future". Landholders and other interested groups are being asked to submit a tender to apply for long term funding to undertake Biodiversity activities in their area within the MIA EnviroWise boundary. BioTender annual payments to successful applicants will be for ten to fifteen years for fencing, weed and pest control, stock control and enhancement plantings of remnant native vegetation. The payments are designed to help establish sites as designated remnant native vegetation areas and to manage them long term in a way that improves the health of the site. The tender period begins Monday 12 May and closes 4pm Friday 6 June 2008, with applications to be submitted into the locked Tender Box at Murrumbidgee Irrigation reception 462-468 Banna Avenue, Griffith NSW 2680.
