19 April 2010 Students to play lead role in environment protection Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) invites upper primary school students to participate in a new environmental leadership program to be held at its Griffith office on April 21. The Enviro Champions Program has been designed to encourage local students who show an interest in the environment to gain further skills in environmental awareness and enhance their capacity to influence others on environmental matters. MI’s Natural Resource Management Education Officer, Kerri-Anne Keely said that “it is important to provide our youth with opportunities to lead in environmental issues to ensure a sustainable future.” “The program, the first of its kind in the area, will be an exciting way for students to learn more about protecting the environment and motivate their peers to become more environmentally friendly in their day to day lives,” said Mrs Keely. Rising Generations, a Sydney based leadership company have been engaged by organisers to run a variety of fun leadership and team building activities for students on the day. Participants will be supported by Murrumbidgee Irrigation’s program staff and a school mentor with a follow up session planned for later in the year to evaluate the program and discuss future planning.
