Murrumbidgee Irrigation looks to the future
22 November 2024
Long serving Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) CEO, Brett Jones, has announced he will finish in his role following next year’s Annual General Meeting
Mr Jones said this decision aligns with the completion of his contract and allows for a smooth and deliberate succession process.
“When I signed my final contract three years ago, I set clear priorities: completing the automation of our delivery system, building a strong leadership team, and ensuring MI is positioned for long-term success,” he explained.
“I am proud to say we have achieved these goals thanks to the hard work and dedication of the MI Team.”
Mr Jones said being CEO of MI has been one of the greatest privileges of his career.
“I have loved every moment of working with this exceptional team, serving our customers, and leading the evolution of MI into the innovative, resilient business it is today,” he said.
“At the same time, family is very important to me, and I look forward to spending more time with my grandson and family after my time at MI. As we enter the next phase of MI’s journey, the business needs a CEO who can commit for 3 to 5 years to lead us through this exciting digital transformation and continuous improvement. It is the right time to hand over to someone who can guide MI into this future.”
Over the next 12 months, Mr Jones said his focus remains on key strategic initiatives, including securing feasibility funding, advancing the Urban Channel Project, and collaborating with Coleambally Irrigation and Murray Irrigation to address the impacts of water buybacks.
“Together with the Board and the MI Team, we will continue to deliver on our commitments and build on our successes,” he said.
Since Mr Jones joined MI in 2015, the business has achieved significant milestones including improving safety performance across business, completing the automation program, and reskilling and restructuring the workforce.
“This next phase is full of potential, and I am confident that MI is well-equipped to seize these opportunities with the strong foundation we have built,” he said.
MI Chair, Tracey Valenzisi, expressed the Board’s appreciation for Mr Jones decision to provide them with an early notice of his planned departure, marking a decade of dedicated service to MI and their stakeholders.
“This early notice reflects Brett’s thoughtful leadership and ensures ample time for the Board to conduct a thorough and considered process to appoint the next CEO,” she said.
“MI is in a strong position, with a clear strategy and a capable leadership team, ready to continue delivering for our customers and the region as we move into the next phase of innovation and growth. Brett’s contribution to MI has been transformative, and we are fortunate to have his continued leadership through 2025 as we advance key projects and initiatives.
“We are committed to finding a successor who will build on Brett’s legacy and guide MI through the opportunities and challenges of the future. The Board will share further updates as the succession process progresses.”
